How Long Does a Bathroom Remodeling Consultation Take?
If you’re considering a new walk-in shower or tub and shower remodel, you may be wondering what happens during the in-home consultation—and how much time you should set aside.
At L.J. Stone, most bathroom remodeling consultations take around 60 to 90 minutes, although every appointment is different.
Some are shorter. Others take longer because the homeowner has more questions or wants to explore different design options.
There isn’t a stopwatch running.
The goal isn’t to keep you in a meeting for a certain amount of time. It’s to give you the information you need to understand your options, design a project that fits what you’re looking for, and know what that project will cost.
Here’s what typically happens during that time.
Why Does a Bathroom Remodeling Consultation Take 60–90 Minutes?
A bathroom consultation involves more than taking a few measurements and showing you samples.
Before we can accurately design and price your project, we first need to understand what you want to change and why.
Maybe your tub is becoming difficult to step over. Maybe your shower is outdated, hard to clean, or showing signs of age. Or maybe nothing is necessarily wrong—you simply want something that looks and functions differently.
Your Design Consultant will ask questions, listen to what you're looking for, and help you explore the available options.
What Happens During the Consultation?
Although every appointment is a little different, there are several things we typically cover.
1. We Talk About Your Current Bathroom
Before talking about products, we want to understand the problem you're trying to solve.
We'll discuss what you like and dislike about your current space, how you use it, and what you would like to change.
This gives the rest of the consultation some direction.
2. We Inspect and Measure the Space
Your Design Consultant will measure and inspect the existing tub or shower area.
Accurate measurements help determine what options are possible and allow us to build pricing around your actual project rather than giving you a rough estimate based on assumptions.
3. You Explore Your Design Options
You'll also have an opportunity to see the different choices available for your project, which may include:
Wall colors and patterns
Shower bases or tubs
Fixtures and finishes
Shelving and storage
Grab bars and safety features
Shower seating
Doors and enclosures
Accessories
Some homeowners already know exactly what they want. Others want to see what's available before deciding.
Either is perfectly fine.
Our role is to explain the differences, answer your questions, and let you determine what makes the most sense for your bathroom.
What About the Parts You Can't See?
A bathroom remodel isn't only about what the finished shower looks like.
During your consultation, we'll also explain how the system is installed, the materials being used, how water is managed behind the walls, and what happens if unexpected conditions are discovered during installation.
This is also a good time to discuss warranties.
At L.J. Stone, the products we install are backed by manufacturer warranties on the materials, while our installation is protected by L.J. Stone's lifetime workmanship warranty on the labor.
Understanding both is important because the product and the installation are two separate parts of your remodeling project.
You'll Get to Know L.J. Stone, Too
The consultation isn't only about whether your bathroom can be remodeled. It's also an opportunity to decide whether you feel comfortable with the company doing the work.
You can ask about our installation process, communication, warranties, service, scheduling, or what happens after you decide to move forward.
You should understand not only what you're buying, but also who you're trusting to install and stand behind it.
When Will You Know the Price?
Once we've measured the space, discussed your goals, and you've selected the features you want, we can put together pricing for your specific project.
Instead of a generic price for "a new shower," you'll be able to see what your project, with the options you've selected, will cost.
From there, you can decide what you'd like to do.
Should You Leave Extra Time After Your Appointment?
You don't need to block off your entire day, but it can be helpful to avoid scheduling something immediately afterward.
You may have more questions than you expected. You might want to compare a few different designs or see how changing a feature affects the price.
Leaving yourself a little flexibility means you can spend more time when you want to, rather than watching the clock.
How Can You Prepare?
You don't need to do homework before your consultation.
However, it can help to think about what you like and dislike about your current bathroom. If you've saved inspiration photos or seen features you like, have those available.
Most importantly, bring your questions.
Ask about materials, installation, warranties, maintenance, pricing, financing, timelines, or anything else that matters to you.
So, How Much Time Should You Set Aside?
For most homeowners, planning for approximately 60 to 90 minutes is a good starting point.
But don't think of that as a required appointment length.
Your consultation could take less time if you already know what you want. It could take longer if you'd like to explore more possibilities or have additional questions.
Ultimately, the consultation should take as long as you need it to take.
Our goal isn't to rush you toward a decision. It's to help you understand your options, what your project will involve, what it will cost, and what you can expect if you choose to work with L.J. Stone.
Because knowing what to expect is a big part of making home improvement predictable.
